A FLAVORFUL FRUIT

As the global demand for diverse, tasty products continues to grow, Vilmorin-Mikado stands out with its range of delicious kabocha.

This Japanese squash features firm orange flesh and a rich, sweet taste. There are lots of ways to cook and enjoy kabocha: steamed, fried, diced, mashed, as a soup, etc.

Kabocha is mainly grown and eaten in Asia, but it is also produced in Mexico and New Zealand.

VILMORIN-MIKADO, EXPERT AND MARKET LEADER

With nearly 60 years’ experience in the selection of kabocha and a dedicated research program, Vilmorin-Mikado is a global player in the kabocha market and a leader in mini-kabochas.

Through our teams operating in Japan, China and South Korea, we work closely with growers and distributors on a daily basis to anticipate and meet market needs with high-quality seeds.

In South Korea, 60% of the kabocha is grown from Vilmorin-Mikado seeds.

A RANGE TO SUIT ALL TASTES

Vilmorin-Mikado has a constantly evolving range that meets the needs of the entire sector. Our teams conduct research on multiple criteria including taste, yield, disease resistance, color of varieties, and much more.

Some of the main varieties marketed under the 'Mikado' brand include:

  • Mini kabochas, like ‘Bocchan,’ the most delicious of all our varieties, small enough to fit into the palm of your hand.

  • Dry kabocha, i.e. fruits with a dry texture. ‘K7’ is one of these varieties and is mainly sold on the fresh fruit market.

  • High-yielding kabocha, such as ‘Manzoku’.

  • Other colorful varieties (red, white, etc.), including ‘Akaibocchan’, Bocchan’s orange sister.
