TOPURIA: The tasty tomato that defies tobamovirus
Go backVilmorin-Mikado announces the launch of TOPURIA, its first tobamovirus-resistant tomato variety with a truly exquisite taste.
TOPURIA, COMBINING STRENGTH AND TASTE
Tobamovirus-resistant Topuria combines a firm texture with a delicious taste. This highly productive variety stands out with its superb cluster structure and uniform fruit.
RIGOROUS SELECTION PROCESS
With 15% of sales revenue devoted to research, Vilmorin-Mikado is creating tomato varieties that can cope with new diseases and climatic constraints for over 200 years. Since the arrival of ToBRFV, our teams have been striving to find solutions to combat this virus, which is destroying so many crops.
To develop these varieties, Vilmorin-Mikado implements a selection process based on solid scientific evidence. This process comprises two tests:
Laboratory tests: Plants are subjected to ToBRFV pressure to analyze their performance against the virus.
Testing in real-life conditions: The TOPURIA variety is grown and assessed in countries where tobamovirus pressure is high, such as Jordan, Sicily and Mexico.
Different combinations of rootstocks and tomatoes are also assessed to find the best combination of agronomic quality (fruit quality, earliness, yield) and resistance.
A real breakthrough for the species, TOPURIA offers tomato growers a reliable, sustainable solution. From 2024 onwards, it will be marketed in Spain, then distribution will be extended worldwide.
